Frequently Asked Questions

Guitar Questions:

Q:  Do I need my own guitar?

A:  Yes, acoustic and electric guitars are great.  I find that it is a better idea for a beginning student to start on acoustic.  For smaller children 3/4 size guitars are a good idea.  A $20 guitar is never a good idea.  Cheap guitars will not stay in tune and the student will be discouraged from the start.  Plan on spending $100 and up for a playable instrument.

Q:  What else do I need besides a guitar?

A:  An electronic tuner, metronome, music stand, and a good practice environment.

Q: What kind of books should I purchase?

A:  The instructor will assign books based on an initial evaluation of the student’s experience.  Be prepared to purchase what the instructor assigns.

Q:  How much should I practice?

A:  A minimum of 20 minutes a day, 4 days a week is a good starting place.

Q:  How does my son or daughter know what to practice every week?

A:  The instructor will date pages in the student’s book for the week.  If desired, a practice log will be given to the student to fill out assignments and times practiced each day.

Piano Questions:

Q: Do I need my own Piano?

A: A piano is not necessary, a keyboard will do; although I do recommend a keyboard that has weighted keys.  This makes it feel more authentic and is easier to play.

Q: What else do I need?

A:  Books, which will be purchased by the instructor on your behalf, which will be paid for upon the lesson the book is started.
